Sewing Machine Operator I - 1st Shift  (Full Time)

Assists the Supervisor in the production of high-quality aircraft parts & subassemblies following Piper Drawings, Process Specifications (PPS) and other manufacturing instructions. Assists in meeting or exceeding planned production and delivery schedules while maximizing company resources to achieve company goals.

Essential Job Functions: Performs or assists the Supervisor in the following tasks:

  • Ability to read and understand engineering design specifications applicable to assigned work orders.
  • Must be able to use basic measuring tools (i.e., rulers, calipers, scales).
  • Layout, cut, assemble, sew, and identify material for simple patterns with the use of aids and templates.
  • Cut and trim materials with the use of scissors, razors, cutting wheels, and guillotines to meet design needs.
  • Trim seams of assembled covers.
  • Install grommets and other hardware to sewn assemblies.
  • Identify newly fabricated products in accordance with design specifications.
  • Identify and select materials based on work orders and engineering specifications.
  • Machine serge material perimeters when required.
  • Work with a variety of upholstery materials including vinyl, leather, foam, canvas, muslin, fiberfil, etc.
  • Follow established work procedures to minimize unnecessary rework and/or scrap.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computers and programs are necessary to perform the duties of this position. Working knowledge of the PACT system and SFIS as related to Piper.
  • Make required record entries in logs, forms, and work orders per QP and department specific requirements.
  • Assist quality control with final inspection and rework non-conformities as required.
  • Report machine/equipment malfunctions to senior sewing machine operator or Supervisor.
  • Willingness to temporarily be assigned to other departments to assist in aircraft production.
  • Adjust work processes and shift schedule/hours to meet production schedules as determined by the supervisor or manager.
  • Partner with senior teammates within career path to receive and share practical knowledge for proper training to perform necessary job functions and requirements in order to attain satisfactory levels of performance and production effectivity.
  • Adhere and maintain all departmental compliance requirements such as Safety, Environmental Protection, FOD and Tool Control, 5S and other assigned programs.
  • Perform duties as assigned by supervision.

Physical Demands

Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate job specific equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs. Other physical requirements include the ability to bend, kneel, crouch, twist, balance and reach above, out, and below.
