The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Microelectronics and Device Applications (MDA) group pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. One of our most challenging new fields combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law, advancing development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. You’ll work in a R&D environment alongside a broad array of scientists and engineers to make these processing solutions a reality and deliver respanable new advantages to the warfighter.

This position requires full-time on-site support at our Linthicum, MD location or our Annapolis Junction, MD.

Responsibilities:

  • Characterize the electrical/ thermal properties and performance of semiconductor and superconductor devices at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Develop and implement advanced test equipment, methods, and procedures for above.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret and manage test data.
  • Effectively summarize and communicate results to peers and stakeholders.
  • Support the current and future development of test platforms within function, cost, and schedule constraints.
  • Document equipment and test requirements/ procedures.
  • Help define changes to improve testing methodology, equipment, testing procedures, manufacturing processes, or new testing requirements.
  • Collaborate with test/ design/ software/ operations teams and leadership to assess device function/ performance, understand potential impact to circuit/ system applications, and work to advance.

This position may be filled as a Principal or Sr. Principal level based on the requirements below.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Experimental Physicist:

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field; Masters Degree, and 3 plus years of relevant professional experience; Bachelors Degree with 5 plus years of relevant professional experience.
  • Research lab experience with good hands-on skills using electrical/ computer equipment (e.g. device analyzer, signal measurement unit, waveform generator, network analyzer etc.).
  • Trouble shooting and system integration experience.
  • Skilled coding for lab testing and data analysis. (e.g. Python, Matlab, C, C++)
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Demonstrated analytic skills and data analysis experience.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance.

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field and 3 plus years of related professional experience; Masters Degree, and 6 plus years of relevant professional experience; Bachelors Degree with 8 plus years of relevant professional experience
  • Research lab experience with good hands-on skills using electrical/ computer equipment (e.g. device analyzer, signal measurement unit, waveform generator, network analyzer etc.).
  • Trouble shooting, system integration and lab automation experience.
  • Skilled coding for lab testing and data analysis (e.g. Python, Matlab, C, C++).
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team
  • Demonstrated analytic skills and data analysis experience.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) clearance.

Preferred Qualifications for both Principal and Sr. Principal Experimental Physicist:

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of the principles of microelectronic device physics and and demonstrated application to testing of semiconductor devices.
  • Experience in cryogenic laboratory environment.
  • Experience in leading projects or small technical teams.
  • Experience in low current measurements, advanced test development, operations, and automation.
  • Experience in applied noise characterization and applied RF testing of CMOS devices.
  • Experience in applied BSIM model development and validation.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph
Salary Range: $123,900 - $185,900
Salary Range 2: $153,600 - $230,400
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
