What are our expectations?

The P&WC Occupational Health Nurse is a professional who delivers primary occupational health services to promote the health and safety of employee, workplace and the organization. Under the supervision of the Nursing Manager / Medical Director and/or her delegates, the Occupational Health Nurse will work as part of a multidisciplinary team composed of doctors, nurses, health and safety advisors, human resources advisors, workers’ representatives, insurance claims agents and others as required. The Occupational Health Nurse will assist Halifax employees with disability case management in collaboration with the various medical and administrative groups and also collaborate on Canada-wide projects. The OHN maintains professional competence and engages in and is accountable for on-going practice-relevant professional learning.

What your day to day will look like?

  • Assist employees/organization in the comprehensive management of occupational and non-occupational illness (Sick, STIP, LTIP) and injury in keeping with knowledge of nursing standards, best practice principles, and legislative requirements:

    • Initiate first aid, documentation, reports/forms, follow-up, communication, and necessary tasks related to effective case management.

    • Respond to employees questions about their insurance policy, their health, and their return to work.

    • Build an alliance with the employee on leave to optimize opportunities for return to work and recovery of functional abilities.

    • Work in partnership with the various stakeholders involved in disability management, including the manager.

    • Collaborate with internal and external HCP and third-party insurers to facilitate appropriate assessments and interventions that promote employee health and timely RTW.

    • Identify appropriate accommodation and facilitate early and safe return to work plans.

    • Monitor and coordinate RTW and evaluate outcome/effectiveness.

    • Ensure that the information provided to the insurer is complete and truthful.

    • Discuss as necessary with the insurers analysts for the sake of information sharing.

    • Upon RTW, work in partnership with the manager, HR, and the other Health and Wellness Services functions, while respecting professional confidentiality in order to establish the success factors for a sustainable return to work.

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess and provide primary health care, education, counseling, and facilitate referral to internal/external services as deemed necessary (e.g., occupational physician, EFAP, physio).

  • Manage employee health screening and periodical medical examinations/surveillance based on the identification of hazards/risks as determined by the EH&S/Trainer:

    • Interpret and communicate results and coordinate/support appropriate follow-up and collaborate with the occupational physician and hygienist as deemed necessary.

    • Facilitate referrals to external providers as applicable.

    • Communicate surveillance results, maintaining the confidentiality of employee PHI to workplace stakeholders when necessary.

    • Provide guidance to employees regarding safe work practices to reduce exposure and promote health and well-being.

  • Participate in committees or projects as required, linking to the promotion of employee wellness/safety strategies or adding value to the organization as a whole.

  • Comply with established practice protocols, medical directives, and standard work of P&WC.

  • Adhere to confidentiality best practice principles and guidelines as per company privacy policy, legislation, and Nova Scotia professional order.

  • Actively participate in medical team meetings.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The tools you need to be successful

  • 5 years working in medical adult care and/or in an Occupational Health setting

  • Competencies in all aspects of nursing practice, including knowledge of anatomy and risk management.

  • Ability to perform high-level analytical and administrative work

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Proficiency with computer systems and software applications, i.e., MS Office (compulsory), SAP

  • Systems thinking

  • Adaptability, including time management of multiple tasks with varying degrees of importance and deadlines

  • Forward-thinking with an ability to work independently with minimal supervision as a resilient and proactive team player

  • Great propensity for adaptation and flexibility (able to respond rapidly to changing situations) to ensure continuity of service

  • Learning agility, strategic, and innovative thinking skills
