Senior Manager, Environmental Health & Safety
Job Description:

Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Leader to direct strategic and operational safety programs for our growing Marina, CA site. This role combines high-level strategy with a strong field presence, ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence through proactive risk mitigation. As a trusted advisor to site leadership, you will lead cross-functional safety initiatives, strengthen our safety culture, and scale practical EH&S solutions to support our long-term growth. This position is based in Marina, CA, with periodic travel to other local Joby sites.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of EH&S professionals, providing clear direction and professional development while fostering a high-performance, accountable culture.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to site leadership and facilitate Safety Committees, integrating EHS initiatives with Lean Manufacturing principles like 5S and Visual Management.
  • Interpret and ensure site-wide adherence to OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DOT, and DTSC standards. Oversee all regulatory reporting systems, including CERS, eVQ, and the Biennial Reporting System (BRS).
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes and equipment designs to identify chemical/physical hazards; implement engineering and administrative controls to reduce occupational exposure and prevent injury.
  • Execute formal EHS audits, safety walkthroughs, and monitoring programs to identify and correct unsafe conditions while ensuring conformance with state and federal standards.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for EHS events and manage the closure of action items. Oversee Workers’ Compensation claims, return-to-work programs, and the sharing of organizational safety lessons.
  • Manage the SDS program and oversee the development of technical training materials (e.g., HAZCOM, Electrical Safety, Ergonomics) to ensure that safety procedures are consistently applied across the site.
Required
  • BS in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Safety Engineering, Aviation, Safety, Physical Sciences, Health, or similar technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in EHS roles with a demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility and leadership.
  • 5+ years of direct people management experience within EHS or related fields.
  • 5+ year of experience in a manufacturing environment and/or aviation. This includes job hazard analysis of routine and non-routine tasks, laboratory management, site inspections, development and delivery of safety training, compliance obligations, hazardous waste management, and records/documentation.
  • Hazardous Waste, DOT, and HAZWOPER.
  • Experience creating and conducting safety training in an R&D environment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations with emphasis on Process Safety Management, LOTO, Machine Guarding, and Electrical Safety.
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Current drivers license.
Desired
  • Experience in ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001. ISO 14001:2015 Lead Auditor.
  • Experience in management system implementation.
  • Experience implementing behavior-based safety (BBS) programs.
  • Experience in environmental programs: RCRA, Storm Water, and SPCC.
  • Experience in an aviation manufacturing or maintenance environment.
  • MS in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Safety Engineering or MS in environmental management, physical sciences, safety management, industrial hygiene, or an appropriate technical field.
  • CSP, ASP, MPH, P.E., CIH, and/or CHMM.
Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $144,800.00/yr- $193,100.00/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
