Job SummaryReporting to the Manager, Disability Management Programs, the Disability Management Specialist manages and monitors the short-term and long-term disability claims, occupational injury claims, and medical accommodations across the corporation. The Specialist facilitates the timely and structured return to work of employees to the corporation and provides support and guidance to Managers, Human Resources and Labour Relations regarding medical absences and accommodations.
The specialist works with third party providers who provide medical case management for short/long term disability, accommodation and occupational injury claims.

In this role you will:

  • Facilitate the disability management program for both occupational and non-occupational illnesses or injuries, and medically based accommodations
  • Collaborate with Third Party Providers, including disability insurers, vocational rehabilitation professionals and case management providers to develop specific case management plans aimed at assisting employees throughout their recovery and return to work
  • Conduct regular follow ups regarding employee recovery and return to work potential; providing timely updates to work sites.
  • Provide consultation, support and advice to internal stakeholders including managers, employees, unions, Labour Relations, Employee Relations, and other Human Resources Professionals regarding all aspects of disability management; this includes short and long-term disability, workers’ compensation, and accommodation-related issues
  • Maintain accurate documentation and reporting surrounding Disability Management cases.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of training, education and awareness programs focused on disability management

What you bring:

  • Post secondary education in a related field such as Rehabilitation Counselling, Disability Management, Social Sciences, or Occupational Health
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Disability Management, Vocational Rehabilitation, Case/Claims Management, or as a Return-to-Work Specialist
  • Experience applying and interpreting policies, legislations and regulations
  • Experience in consulting with clients to identify needs, providing expert advice and guidance in developing options to resolve problems, cases and mitigate risks
  • Experience working with unionized employees is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of case management principles, including collaboration, vocational rehabilitation, return to work, and accommodation
  • Knowledge of Canadian Human Rights legislation, Workers’ Compensation legislation, and The Privacy Act.
  • Knowledge of sick leave/ short-term and long-term disability programs.

  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, legislation and collective agreement provisions appropriately
  • High Degree of Professionalism, tact and respect for employees and privacy.
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, with excellent customer service skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to work well under pressure and as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
