We are seeking a Senior Systems/Software Engineer to join our Engineering team in Omaha, Nebraska with a Meteorological background in Air Force Weather to join the AFW (Air Force Weather) Enterprise programs and expand our distinguished team to develop a state-of-the-art network of meteorological data and applications.
The development of this national asset will provide global coverage, monitor environmental conditions, collect, disseminate, and process data about the Earths weather, atmosphere, oceans, land, and near-space environment.
The AFW Enterprise software provides a cloud migration implementation of the 2nd largest data repository in the Department of Defense.
The teams work in a DevSecOps cadence deploying meteorological microservices to Air Force Weather and the Department of Defense.
The AFW Enterprise programs are looking for a qualified systems/software engineer to join the AFW enterprise team as a Principal Systems/Software Engineer with a Meteorological background in Air Force Weather.
This position can be Onsite or Remote
What You Will Do
Supporting the requirements analysis, meteorological testing, meteorological verification, design, and integration of software.
Responsible for meteorological accuracy, supporting software validation and verification, qualification, configuration control and documentation at the component level.
Involved with most phases of the software development life cycle including SW requirements analysis, use case support, detailed design, generating test plans, and ensuring code meets requirements through unit testing, updating technical documents, software integration support, problem detection, and resolving discrepancy reports.
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, IT related field preferred or (STEM) focused - Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant Meteorology Systems/Software Engineering experience or 6 years of relevant experience with a Masters degree in Meteorology, IT or (STEM).
Requires 3+ years’ experience in Air Force Weather operations, Experience with numerical models that support Air Force Weather: Galwem, LIS, GEPS, Advect Cloud, DCF4, ODLA, WW3, FAROP, OSAA, OSAD. This includes practical experience working with the supported data formats, netcdf, GRIB1, GRIB2, and Zarr.
Experience with point-based/Alphanumeric products that support Air Force Weather: Observations (IWXXM and BUFFR), TAFS, Mareograms, Skew-t, MicroWx Sensors, Solar data, Chemical downwind messages, Cloud free forecasting, drop zone winds, downwind messages, forecast vertical profile, and metadata schemas, and historical text-based products.
Experience with Air Force weather’s enterprise vision to include how operational technological capability will drive effectiveness for military forecasters. Experience working as a member of small team using the Scrum methodology (e.g. Sprints, Scrums, Backlogs). Experience with meteorological and technical information and concerns to management, verbally and in writing.

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.
Remote: This position currently is designated as remote. Employees who are working in remote roles will work primarily offsite (from home) but may be expected to travel to the site location as needed. The successful candidate for this role will be required to reside and work from one of the 50 U.S. states (excluding U.S. territories).
This position requires a security clearance. DCSA Consolidated Adjudication Services (DCSA CAS), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Location: Omaha, NE
The salary range for this role is 101,000 USD - 203,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
