The Opportunity

We are a seeking an experienced Principal System Safety Engineer to join the BCS team. BCS is a next generation networking product that is the centerpiece for multiple projects and campaigns. The BCS combines both developmental and off the shelf hardware and software to provide world leading communications capability for ADF personnel. It can be rapidly deployed from anywhere, and its modular design provides a flexible, scalable solution that can be customized for various mission needs.

Responsibilities

  • Technically Lead the team to perform System Safety Engineering activities.
  • Support projects in understanding requirements and design implications pertaining to safety and identify potential and realised performance and safety considerations.
  • Guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Lead specific scopes of work in safety engineering for projects.
  • Actively promote the benefit of System Safety across the organisation and contribute to the development and growth of these disciplines within BDA.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience in System Safety Engineering or related discipline in a complex project environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of industry standards such as MIL-STD-882E, RTCA DO-178 or DO-278.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills that enable you to influence outcomes in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer engagement skills and experience in conducting System Safety Working Groups.
  • Experience in developing System Safety Program Plans, Hazard Logs, Hazard Analysis Reports, and other safety related documentation.
  • A continuous improvement mindset.
  • Tertiary degree qualification in an engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet Defence security requirements.

Desirable:

  • Experience within Defence or complex engineering project environments.
  • Experience with Communication Systems.
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering principles and lifecycle management.
  • Experience developing and executing against Systems Engineering artifacts including Systems Engineering Management Plan and Verification and Validation Plan.
  • Experience in technical problem solving.
  • Experience in soliciting, analyzing and communicating customer requirements in a cross-disciplinary technical environment.
