Job Description:

Purpose and Scope:          

Works as dispatcher in the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Receives emergency phone calls via the VESTA 911 phone system, gathers pertinent information, in accordance with checklists
  • Must comply with National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Public Safety Telecommunications Personnel Professional Qualifications Standard 1061
  • Dispatches fire, medical, protective services, and other emergency response vehicles and personnel as appropriate to aircraft, structural, hazardous materials, medical, security, and other emergencies.
  •  Receives routine phone calls in a professional manner and takes appropriate action.
  •  Receives trouble, supervisory, and fire alarms via Monaco D-21 detection/alerting system and determines actions required based on type of alarm, building number, and applicable fire system outages
  • Transmits and/or relays requests for mutual aid through other Public Safety Answering Points within the local area and transmits these requests to/from the senior fire official
  • Performs Emergency Medical, Fire, Police Dispatch (EMD, EFD, EPD) services to callers with instructions to help treat patients until responding EMS units arrive in accordance with checklists provided.
  • Reads grid maps and establishes appropriate evacuation cordons, emergency control points, staging, and triage areas during emergency responses in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains daily and emergency logs, to include such as status of explosives and munitions storage, fire systems and vehicle outages, additional emergency and routine information in the Automated Civil Engineer System - Fire Department (ACES-FD) database system.     
  • Communicates via radio, in-station public address, and telephone systems to deliver pertinent information to responding crews, including mutual aid responders. 
  • Participates in recurring training with dispatch center personnel to ensure compliance with all training requirements.
  • Assists with monitoring and troubleshooting all emergency communications equipment.
  • Perform all other position related duties as described in local policies and procedures

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Two (2) years of full-time work experience directly related to the FD communications center or dispatching other emergency services.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Office programs to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, computer-aided dispatching programs.
  • Understand general FD and EMS operations and terminology. 
  • Can attend and successfully complete on- and off-site training courses as required by the USAF or the Company.  
  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally, clear and concise both orally and in writing.  
  • Must use a calm and stable demeanor while dealing with emergency situations.

Certification Requirements:

  • Certified as a Public Safety Telecommunicator I & II or equivalent through an accredited program
  • Must be certified to Hazardous Material Awareness level
  • DoD certification to the Telecommunicator I & II or equivalent through an accredited program. 

Additional Licenses or Certifications:

If not presently certified, must be able to obtain and maintain Company selected certification to perform Emergency Medical, Fire, Police Dispatch (EMD, EFD, EPD) duties in the allotted period of time. Comply with NFPA 1061 training requirements

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Requires being physically and mentally able to perform the assigned work.  Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time.  Must be able to speak in a clear manner, be temperamentally suited for the position, and act calmly and decisively in an emergency.

Must have the ability to distinguish basic colors and the ability to hear (hearing aid permitted).  Must be able to work in a constant noise environment (radios, phones, computers, fans and alarms)

Must remain alert during periods of inactivity and when carrying out repetitive operations and works harmoniously with other people. It is a condition of employment to wear company issued uniforms according to direction/company policy.
